RSICC CODE PACKAGE PSR-558

1.         NAME AND TITLE

TEMPEST-2:    Thermalization Program for Neutron Spectra and Multi-Group Cross-Sections.

2.         CONTRIBUTORS

Boeing Huntsville Simulation Center, The Boeing Company, Huntsville, Alabama, through the NEA Data Bank, Issy-les-Moulineaux, France.

3.         CODING LANGUAGE AND COMPUTER

Fortran4 created for IBM 709 and IBM 7090 computers, modified for IBM 360 and IBM3081 systems. (P00558I036000).

4.         NATURE OF PROBLEM SOLVED

TEMPEST2 is a neutron thermalization program based upon the Wigner-Wilkins approximation for light moderators and the Wilkins approximation for heavy moderators. A Maxwellian distribution may also be used. The program provides microscopic and macroscopic cross-section averages over the thermal neutron spectrum.

5.         METHOD OF SOLUTION

TEMPEST2 is a neutron thermalization program based upon the Wigner-Wilkins approximation for light moderators and the Wilkins approximation for heavy moderators. A Maxwellian distribution may also be used. The model used may be selected as a function of energy. The second-order differential equations are integrated directly rather than transformed to the Riccati equation. The program provides microscopic and macroscopic cross-section averages over the thermal neutron spectrum.

6.         RESTRICTIONS OR LIMITATIONS

The maximum number of elements in the library must not exceed 300. The total number of tabulated cross sections must not exceed 3000.

7.         TYPICAL RUNNING TIME

One to two minutes are required. NESC0050/04NEA-DB compiled, linked and executed the test case included in the package on IBM 3081K in less than 10 CPU seconds.

8          COMPUTER HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

NESC0050/04180K bytes of main storage on IBM 3081K.

9.         COMPUTER SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

A Fortran compiler is required.
