3. CONTRIBUTOR

United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, Nuclear Physics Division, A.E.R.E., Harwell, England.

4. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND INFORMATION

MONTUK-80 is the newly frozen version of MONTUK which is an extended version of DLC-33/MONTAGE.

MONTUK differed from MONTAGE in that MONTAGE always provided 100 cross-section values whereas MONTUK suppressed those zeros which referred to energies below the reaction threshold. This reduced the number of records in the library from a possible 18,180 to just 6,807.

5. APPLICATION OF THE DATA

MONTUK provided neutron reaction cross-section data for the energy range from thermal to 15 MeV and filled needs for high fluence irradiations in which elemental transmutation is a significant factor.

MONTUK-80 incorporates multigroup data based on the Livermore point cross-section library, ACTL, such that wherever an overlap occurred, the ACTL data was used in preference to all other sources except ENDF/B-IV. It is intended, primarily, for use in studies of fusion reactor structural and coolant materials.

6. SOURCE AND SCOPE OF DATA

The library contains data for 1,477 reactions. The title card specifies the parent nuclide, the reaction type, the number of cross-section values given on the following cards, the reaction description and the data source.

The library was prepared by merging the UKCTRIII library with a multigroup representation of the ACTL library generated by adding together reactions such as (n,np) and (n,d) which lead to the same daughter nuclides. Reactions involving parent nuclides in excited (isomeric) states were omitted because these cross-sections are very closely similar to those for the corresponding ground states. Also, cross-sections to product nuclides in isomeric states were omitted because the isotope generation code (ORIGEN) used in conjunction with the data library assumes the cross-section for populating an isomeric state to be directly proportional to that for populating the ground state. Highest priority was placed on ENDF/B-IV data with the ACTL data being selected in preference to the remaining UKCTRIII data sets.
