4. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND INFORMATION
The large amount of data available on the physical characteristics of "Reference Man" are derived
from many different sources and contains some anomalies. Important elements are missing from some
of the systems resulting in mass deficiencies. An analysis of the data has indicated that 12 systems had
errors in mass above 20% and have to be rejected in any computation of interaction data. The
remaining 69 organs and tissues had mass errors below 5%, with 41 systems within the range 0 - 2%
and 27 within the range 0 - 1%.
5. APPLICATION OF THE DATA
Partial mass attenuation and energy absorption coefficients, at 33 energy points from 10 keV - 100
MeV, have been calculated for the 69 accepted ICRP tissues. For each element the data included all
of the relevant partial effects for both attenuation and absorption interactions.
6. SOURCE AND SCOPE OF DATA
Thirty-three photon energies in MeV were analyzed. Partial mass attenuation and energy
absorption coefficients at each of these energies were calculated by the conventional "Mixture Rule,"
summing the contributions of each element present according to its fractional weight in the tissue.
