RSIC DATA LIBRARY DLC-007

1. NAME AND TITLE OF DATA LIBRARY

HPICE: Evaluated Photon Interaction Library, ENDF/B File 23 Format.

2. NAME AND TITLE OF DATA RETRIEVAL PROGRAM

EDIT-23: A Program to Edit File 23 ENDF/B Photon Interaction Data.

3. CONTRIBUTOR

Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Livermore, California.

4. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND INFORMATION

In 1969, Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Livermore, California, placed some data on X-ray and photon cross sections into ENDF/B format and sent it to RSIC. The data were examined by RSIC, reviewed by J. H. Hubbell of NBS, and made available by RSIC. In 1970, an ad hoc group of the Shielding Subcommittee, Cross Section Evaluating Working Group, reviewed the current evaluations and recommended that DLC-7/HPICE be regarded as the current reference data.

5. APPLICATION OF THE DATA

DLC-7/HPICE is used in general purpose gamma-ray transport codes.

6. SOURCE AND SCOPE OF DATA

The Lawrence Livermore Laboratory has a continuing program to evaluate photon cross sections. Revisions are made about twice a year. The data are given in units of (barns/atom) for energies 1 keV to 100 MeV and for elements Z = 1-83, 86, 90, 92, and 94. The MAT numbers are equal to the atomic numbers (Z).

The following cross sections are tabulated:

MT Cross Section Type

501 Total

502 Coherent scattering

504 Incoherent scattering

516 Pair Production (includes triplet)

602 Photoelectric

DLC-7C (below 1 MeV same as Ref. 4).

DLC-7D (Pair production and total at 4 MeV changed, all elements; incoherent scatter and total at 0.8 MeV changed, 8 elements.

DLC-7E File 27 form factors and incoherent scattering functions were added and new file 23 cross sections were calculated using these new data. July 1975.

DLC-7F Same as DLC-7E but 1973 physical constants were used. Resulting cross sections are less than 0.1 % different from DLC-7E. Sept. 1975.

7. DISCUSSION OF THE DATA RETRIEVAL PROGRAM

A retrieval program called EDIT-23 is supplied for the purpose of editing the data and providing an example of data retrieval. This program is designed to edit photon interaction data in the ENDF/B File 23 format.

8. DATA FORMAT AND COMPUTER

BCD card images; IBM 360/370.

9. TYPICAL RUNNING TIME

To compile EDIT-23 and edit the entire library required 1.5 minutes on the IBM 360/65 computer.
