RSIC CODE PACKAGE CCC-595

1. NAME AND TITLE

PUTZ: A Point-Kernel Photon Shielding Code.

2. CONTRIBUTOR

Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tenn.

3. CODING LANGUAGE AND COMPUTER

Fortran 77; IBM PC

4. NATURE OF PROBLEM SOLVED

PUTZ calculates dose rates from three-dimensional photon sources in a three-dimensional system. The code allows the specification of the source and body geometries as simple parallelopipeds and annular parallelopipeds (tanks) and permits the inclusion of multiple sources and multiple detectors in a single case. The shielding bodies may consist of up to 6 materials.

5. METHOD OF SOLUTION

The point-kernel method employs the Geometric-Progression (GP) formula for the buildup factor. The GP coefficients and attenuation coefficients, taken from the ANSI/ANS-6.4.3-1991 compilation, are read from a data file. An optional multimaterial (composite) buildup factor formula may be used. The FIDO input system is used which allows easy entering or modifying the various input arrays.

6. RESTRICTIONS OR LIMITATIONS

Photon source energies are limited to values between 15 keV and 15 MeV. A total of 6 shielding materials can be treated. All bodies are solid parallelopipeds or parallelopiped shells (tanks).

7. TYPICAL RUNNING TIME

The 2 sample problems took 4.95 and 18.84 seconds on a 25 MHz PC 386.

8. COMPUTER HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

The code was tested on a PC 386, but should run on all IBM PC compatible computers having a math coprocessor.

9. COMPUTER SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

The code was written in Fortran 77 and was tested using the Microsoft Version 5.0 compiler. For implementation on other systems, the OPEN statements are placed in one subroutine (SETIO).
