1. NAME AND TITLE
SAMSY: A One-Dimensional Multilayer Multigroup Neutron Removal-Diffusion and Gamma-Ray Point Kernel Calculator.
2. CONTRIBUTOR
Institute of Nuclear Research, Reactor Engineering Department, Warsaw, Poland.
3. CODING LANGUAGE AND COMPUTER
FORTRAN IV; CDC CYBER-73
4. NATURE OF PROBLEM SOLVED
SAMSY determines the neutron and gamma-ray fields in a multilayered medium. It provides
information on spatial distribution of energy-dependent neutron fluxes and dose rates, primary and
secondary inelastic scattering and capture gamma-ray dose rates, and heat deposition. The program
is designed to solve a range of shielding problems in one-dimensional plane, cylindrical, and spherical
geometries.
5. METHOD OF SOLUTION
The removal-diffusion Spinney method is applied for the calculation of neutron fluxes. The gamma-ray dose rate and/or heat deposition is the product of uncollided flux, absorption coefficient, and buildup factor. There are two optional approaches to the buildup factor evaluation: the first is based on the single-layer buildup factor concept as in the MAC-RAD code, and the second is based on the modified Harima-Nishiwaki formula for buildup factors in multilayered media.
The program uses its own RUSLIB group constants for 26 neutron and 7 gamma-ray groups
(including buildup factor data) for 32 elements.
6. RESTRICTIONS OR LIMITATIONS
Provisions are made for 10 different material mixtures and up to 25 shielding regions with up to
50 mesh points in each region.
7. TYPICAL RUNNING TIME
The estimated running time for the sample problem is 208 seconds on the CDC CYBER-73.
8. COMPUTER HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
The code was designed to run on the CDC CYBER-73. It uses a minimum of 127.5 K octal words
and Standard I/O.
9. COMPUTER SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
The code is operable on the Scope 3.4.4 Operating System using a FORTRAN IV compiler and
the OVERLAY feature.
